Genesis of Southwest Houston can help you identify why your car or truck shakes when braking.
One of the unnerving feelings is when you notice your car vibrate when driving. Is it a tire puncture, did a giant pothole ruin my car suspension, or do I have a broken driveshaft? There are several things that might be the cause of the car shaking, and the severity of the potential damage can fluctuate greatly. The most common cause of the shuddering usually happens in the vicinity of your car’s tires and rims. The rims and tires plant the vehicle to the road, and if anything is broken, will notice. More seriously, it may be something like a broken transmission or a broken control arm. These more major failures may leave you stuck on the side of the road.

If you recently bought new wheels and tires, the car shaking could be caused by the wheels and tires not getting balanced correctly. Balancing the tires makes sure the weight is evenly distributed for the smoothest ride possible. So, if you notice the tire vibration while you are driving, it might be a tire that isn’t balanced properly. If the new tires are properly balanced, but the car is still shaking, make sure the tires are inflated to the proper air pressure, and check to make sure the lugnuts are fully tightened and make sure the tire pressure is correct. If your tires are the cause of the shudder, you should get it checked out immediately.
If your car shakes when you brake, that is a pretty obvious gauge that you should have the brakes looked at. The most likely reason for your steering wheel shudder is worn brake rotors. When a driver presses the brake pedal, brake pads compress against the brake rotors to create friction which will then stop your car. A smooth surface provides smooth braking. A warped surface will vibrate when braking, like how a brick road feels rougher than a highway. Other possible causes of the shaking include frozen calipers and damaged shocks. If you feel your steering wheel wobble, bring it in to get it inspected.
If a vehicle is vibrating before you even start driving, then there’s a chance that you have some broken car parts. The most obvious reasons for your vehicle shaking in idle are:
A Broken Driveshaft – If not perfectly balanced or damaged, it may cause shudders
CV joints That Have Failed – Working in conjunction with the driveshaft, cv joints get the power from the engine to the wheels and tires and, if damaged, can be the cause of the car shaking in idle.
Failed Engine Mounts – As the name implies, these components help secure the engine to the vehicle. If they get damaged or broken, it can allow the engine to engine shake.
